Pockets with a Purpose: Why They Matter for Neurodivergent People

At Hues, we think a lot about the “small” details that can make a big difference to everyday life. One of those details is pockets.

For many neurodivergent people, pockets aren’t just a handy extra – they can be an important part of feeling calm, prepared and comfortable in the world.

Why bags can be overwhelming

Bags are useful, but they can also add to sensory load. They can mean:
  • Extra weight to carry
  • Straps digging into your shoulders
  • Things bumping against your body as you move
  • One more item to keep track of (and worry about losing)
For some people, that’s a lot of extra input to manage on top of everything else happening in their day.

Why pockets can help

Pockets, when they’re designed with intention, can offer a quieter, simpler alternative. They can be:
  • A safe place to keep fidgets, keys, cards and comfort items
  • A way to move through the day hands-free
  • A built-in sensory support you don’t have to think about
For me personally, pockets are a safety net. I like having something to fidget with when my hands need to move, and I feel calmer when the things I worry about losing are right there on me – not in a bag I might put down and forget.

How we are designing pockets at Hues

Because we are designing with neurodivergent people in mind – adults and kids – we’ve rethought what pockets can be in our clothing. Our pockets are:
  • Deep and practical, so you don’t have to carry a bag if you don’t want to
  • Designed with a small internal loop you can fidget with or attach fidget toys to
It’s a simple detail, but for many people it can make everyday life feel a little calmer, more comfortable and more manageable.
Pockets shouldn’t be an afterthought. For a lot of neurodivergent people, they’re essential.
